Goethe henüz 21 yaşındayken çocuk katili Susanna Margaretha'nın davasından etkilenerek efsanevi karakter Faust'un merkezinde olduğu Urfaust isimli bir eser üzerinde çalışmaya başlamıştı. Daha sonra bu yapıtı geliştirip yeni sahneler ve diyaloglar ekleyerek başyapıtına giden ikinci adımı attı: Faust: Bir Fragman.
