Eski yıkılmakta, fakat yeni henüz ufukta görünmemektedir. Roman, Rayski'nin, Volga kenarında, nehrin oyduğu uzun yalıyarın (falezin) -roman adını buradan alır- bitişiğinde bulunan babadan kalma Malinovka köyünde geçirdiği altı ayın dramatik olaylarını konu alır.
