Şekillendirilmeyi, yetiştirilmeyi reddedişin, kendi yolunu seçme mücadelesinin hikayesi.Bu eserinde Bernhard, büyük bir yazar olmanın taşlarının nasıl döşendiğine dair ipuçlarını vermeye başlıyor. Thomas Bernhard, (1931-1989) Hollanda'da doğup Avusturya'da büyüyen Bernhard, büyükbabası olan yazar Johannes Freumbichler tarafından bir sanatçı gibi yetiştirildi. Seekirchen'de ilkokula gitti, Salzburg'daki çeşitli okullarda orta öğrenime devam ederken 1947'de eğitimini bırakıp çıraklığa başladı. Gençliği boyunca yaşadığı solunum yolu rahatsızlıkları yüzünden 1949'da iki yıllığına sanatoryuma yatırıldı. 1952'de Salzburg'daki Mozarteum'da müzik eğitimini sürdürürken Demokratisches Volksblatt gazetesinde muhabirlik yaptı. 1957'den sonra geçimini esasen yazarlıktan sağladı. İngiltere'de ve Avrupa'nın çeşitli ülkelerinde yaşadıktan sonra 1965'te yeniden Avusturya'ya döndü.
